AMERICANS URGED TO EXERCISE CAUTION IN THIS CARIBBEAN DESTINATION

The State Department is warning travelers to be careful when visiting an increasingly popular Caribbean destination.

The agency recently raised its travel advisory ranking for Grenada to "Level 2: Exercise increased caution" because of risk of crime.

"Violent crime can occur anywhere in Grenada," according to an advisory update on Jan. 5. "American citizens in Grenada have been victims of armed robbery, assault, burglary, and rape. In some cases, American citizens have been killed. Police response times are not as fast as one may expect in the United States."

In a statement, Grenada Tourism Authority CEO Stacey Liburd told USA TODAY: "Grenada remains open, safe and fully operational for travelers. ... Grenada has long been recognized as one of the most peaceful and welcoming destinations in the Caribbean, with a strong record of visitor safety and we continue to welcome visitors without interruption." Just last year, Grenada was listed among the 10 safest Caribbean destinations, by travel experts Always All-Inclusive.

Liburd noted the State Department's advisory was precautionary – not a response to a specific incident or change in conditions – and added that there have been no disruptions to flights, accommodations or tourism services.

Travelers are not discouraged from visiting Grenada, but the State Department advises them to keep a low profile, stay aware of their surroundings and not to answer their door unless they know who it is, among other commonsense tips. The agency also encourages registering in its free Smart Traveler Enrollment Program and buying travel insurance.

The State Department ranks international destinations by four advisory levels, ranging from Level 1: Exercise normal precautions to Level 4: Do not travel. Travelers can find country-specific details on the agency’s website.
